How to Check a Used Car for Common Issues

Buying a used car can be a smart financial decision—but only if you know how to spot potential issues ahead of time. A careful inspection can help you avoid costly repairs and negotiate a better price.

Start with a visual check: look for rust, dents, or mismatched paint that could indicate past damage. Inspect tires for uneven wear, check lights and mirrors, and ensure doors and windows function properly.

Under the hood, examine fluid levels, belts, hoses, and look for signs of leaks or corrosion. Check the undercarriage for rust or oil spots that could signal bigger problems.

Take it for a test drive. Listen for odd noises, assess how it accelerates and brakes, and check the steering response. Confirm the AC, heat, and electronics all work.

Ask for a vehicle history report and maintenance records. These can reveal accidents, title issues, or lapses in care.

By inspecting carefully, you’ll make a safer, more informed purchase and avoid unpleasant surprises down the road.
